Kudelski Security Announces FENTEC Participation to Develop New Functional Encryption Technologies

Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland, and Phoenix (AZ), USA, December 19, 2018 – Kudelski Security, the cybersecurity division of the Kudelski Group (SIX:KUD.S), today announced its participation in FENTEC, the initiative of the European Commission Horizon2020 to develop new functional encryption technologies.

This three-year project brings together a team of cryptographers, software experts, hardware specialists and IT industry representatives. The program aims to develop efficient, innovative functional encryption systems, which are application oriented and can be used in a wide range of scenarios. Specific objectives are three-fold: first, to design novel functional encryption systems with varying functional, hardware, software and security requirements; second, to implement a unified, highly optimized cryptographic API of functional encryption; and third, to validate and demonstrate FENTEC technologies and solutions.

The aim of Kudelski Security’s specific contribution is to develop a prototype that enables local decision making at the gateway level of an IoT system, without disclosing end-to-end ciphered data. The prototype aims to detect motion from an encrypted video stream, and by leveraging machine learning, sort encrypted images to trigger response, without decrypting the images. If functional encryption can be leveraged in gateway decision making, without leaking any private information to that gateway, the benefits will be significant. Automation in smart electricity grids and substation as well as smart metering are envisaged. In essence, the security threat is moved from the gateway platform toward the design of the cryptographic scheme, where security is more developed, resulting in increased trust in the IoT edge device.

FENTEC is a 3-year project that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 780108 and brings together 10 different partners from across the European Union, including Atos and several leading universities.

JP Aumasson, VP Technology, will deliver a presentation titled, “Attacking and Defending Blockchains: From Horror Stories to Secure Wallets.” Aumasson’s talk will review recent security failures in blockchain systems, Ethereum smart contract issues, examples of bugs in popular Bitcoin software utilities and how to mitigate risks. Aumasson will also discuss the pros and cons of the different types of bitcoin wallets as well as the risks and benefits of hardware-based wallets for individuals, organizations, and trading platforms. 
Nathan Hamiel, Director Cybersecurity Research, will deliver a presentation on the need for security professionals to adopt a more agile approach to programs in response to a constantly changing business, technology and security landscape. In “Level Up Your Security Mindset,” Hamiel will also talk about the need to move beyond worst-case scenarios and apply the right balance of risk-driven collaboration, innovation and technology to guide security efforts.

Jean-Philippe (JP) Aumasson is a world-renowned expert in cryptography, part-time VP Technology at Kudelski Security, co-founder of Teserakt.io (IoT security), and lead security advisor of Taurus Group (digital asset exchange). JP holds a PhD from EPFL (2009) and has worked for 12 years in applied cryptography, security architecture, and cybersecurity within the Kudelski Group. JP wrote the acclaimed book Serious Cryptography (No Starch Press, 2017) and has designed widely used algorithms such as BLAKE2 and SipHash. Kudelski Security Provides Cryptography Services and Technology Specifically Designed
for Low Power IoT Devices
PHOENIX and ATLANTA, April 30, 2018 – Kudelski Security, the cybersecurity division within the Kudelski Group (SIX:KUD.S) and trusted innovator for the world’s most security-conscious organizations, today announced a strategic agreement with Vypin, a provider of IoT solutions featuring sensor-based beacons and supporting management software. Through this partnership, Vypin has licensed power-efficient, anti-spoofing technology designed by Kudelski Security to extend the life span of Vypin’s beacons and IoT tags. Examples of these devices include reSeal™, an electronic seal for container integrity, and the recently launched safeTstrap™, a sensor-based strap that provides proactive firearm security. 
 
The challenge facing manufacturers of these types of tags is to design algorithms that not only provide robust security but are also power-efficient, to enable the tags to operate for up to five years without having to charge or change the battery. The security risk posed by IoT tags varies depending upon the customer and application, but if a tag can be ‘spoofed,’ the integrity of the information that it provides can legitimately be called into question. For Vypin, security and longevity were both primary concerns and they turned to Kudelski Security for a custom solution to a unique business problem.

The Kudelski anti-spoof solution provides 128-bit security based on industry-standard algorithms. In addition, it prevents spoofing and tampering of beacons and optionally protects the confidentiality of the transmitted data. The solution is optimized for ease-of-integration and efficiency, relying on a BlueNRG-1 system-on-chip (SoC) but is also suitable for a wide range of systems. The solution is differentiated from other available Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) security protocols in that it requires no clock and therefore is more power efficient.
